President Obama has appointed yet another czar—you know, one of those people in his administration with a long title, huge portfolio and no budget to get anything done. This time, it's a worthy enough portfolio assigned to Lynn Rosenthal—fighting domestic violence. But it's a czar-like post of such little consequence, the public announcement was handled by Vice President Joe Biden, not President Obama. We're up over 20 czars. Next week we'll get one to deal with cbyer security. At some point isn't Congress going to get jealous of its prerogatives and insist that the Senate should have the ability to confirm major appointments to the Executive Branch. They should want the same level of oversight over these appointments that they have over those administrators who go through the normal confirmation process. After all, why should he need someone outside of HHS to deal with domestic violence? Why can't Homeland Security deal with cybersecurity? And if there is no budget or power for these individuals, are they anything more than just public relations gimmicks? And if they do have power will there be clashes among the heads of the various departments as they clash with czars who have overlapping jurisdictions.
Yet again, this would be a good reason for divided government. I can well imagine that if a Republican president had appointed so many czars, we'd have Democratic leaders, particularly Robert Byrd making a speech a day and planning legislation to limit such appointments. With a pliant Congress, we don't hear a peep out of them guarding their separation of powers.

So many solutions and so few problems. Next up men will not be allowed to watch the Super Bowl because there is a rumor that they get loud and spill things.
Looks like we'll need a czar czar pretty soon just to keep tabs on all of these czars.
Doesn't Congress have the authority to refuse to appropriate money to pay the salaries of these czars and their staffs? They could also refuse to pay for office space, fleets of limos, telephones, computers and copying machines. But they might be able to afford to buy each member of Congress a copy of the Constitution and maybe even one for Barack.
This is a Democrat Congress run by Obama and Rahm along with the Pelosi-Reid puppets. The more they can grow government with frivolous appointments of Democrat supporters paid for by hardworking taxpayers the better. This is the new Obamapowergrabber "green" machine.
After all--they won--remember.
It would appear that the President is seeking to strengthen his hand--if only by creating positions which report directly to him. Besides that, the average person will probably be more likely to know the names of the czars, after seeing them regularly on the evening news, than the actual heads of the various cabinet level departments.
I'd sure like to know what sort of salaries these people are being paid and where that money is coming from. I'm sure it's coming from our pockets in some way, but I'd like to hear some specifics.
Speaking of new czar's California, because of the current drought, is also appointing a water czar. He or she will be checking for those nice brown lawns and dirty cars. My understanding is that the legislature is giving him the power to cut water during American Idol commercial breaks, the World Series, the Tour de France and the Super Bowl.
I'm planning on either fasting or pulling a Lisa Nowak.
It looks like Obama is setting up a variation of the Louis XIV's "intendant" system. They will owe their positions directly to him. Will speak with "Presidential Authority" (not constituional authority). Also they will be under no disciple but the Presidents. There is the possibility that you'll have over 50 of them. Some may be assigned geographical areas as well as policy assignments.
Yes, we own a czar company. When will you people just accept that!
mark,
Nice play on the word but it does bring to mind the (in)famous Lada, doesn't it?
Pat Patterson,
Nice plan but toilet paper czar Sheryl Crow says you're only allowed one square - not a NASA issued diaper.

I find this all very biz-czar.
