Most Hispanic organizations and the United States Census Bureau do not regard Portuguese as Hispanic. So you Brazilians just don't count.
But Tony Coelho, a Portuguese-American congressman from California, was a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus when he was in the House, and Representative Dennis Cardoza, Democrat of California, whose ancestors came from the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago, is still a member.
The executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, Arturo Vargas, said the contemporary political definition of Hispanic in the United States would definitely not include Cardozo. The practical definition he uses, Mr. Vargas said, includes people who are “descended from countries in the Americas” with a Spanish-language heritage. It does not even include those from Spain itself, he said.
And does being of Puerto Rican descent count as much as being from Central America? Already American Hispanics are regretting that their particular group didn't get the nod.
“Of course, it would have been great to have someone of Central American origin,” Mr. Cerna said. “But she got picked, and I think it’s very good.”But this whole debate is so silly. I see that she prefers the term "Latina" rather than Hispanic indicating that her background comes through Latin America rather than directly from Spain. Historically, the word Hispanic includes the Iberian peninsula, but who cares about history any more? We've got beans to count!
Other Hispanics also lamented that the first Supreme Court justice of Hispanic ancestry did not have roots in their own community. Here in Miami, Ana de Pozo, 24, finished her rice and beans at El Palacio de Los Jugos, and said, “We are waiting now for a Cuban.”
In Los Angeles, Mario Trujillo, president of the Mexican American Bar Association, said he had sent a letter to the Obama administration on behalf of Justice Carlos R. Moreno, a Mexican-American on the California Supreme Court who had been among those considered for the United States Supreme Court.

Should not "Hispanic" refer to a person born in Hispaniola, just as "Mainiac" refers to my relatives in Maine?
Count frijoles later, I say the time has come for the first person of Czech heritage to take a seat on the Supreme Court!
There are already too many names with too many vowels in them - the current lot has no empathy for those of us that have been working hard our entire lives here in the United States despite our obvious disadvantage of having unpronounceable names comprised of unbroken strings of consonants.
Sure Sonia Sotomayor had it tough; her story is compelling, as the talking points repeatedly point out, but did she have to learn an alphabet with letters that didn't appear in her own name?! (OK, I'm hedging my bet that her middle name might add "e" and "u" and sometimes "y") And what about having letters in your name that don't appear in the local alphabet?
I want jstc! (That's "justice" but the "j" is silent, the "c" is pronounced kind of like the "cc" in Italian). Or I'll settle for a satisfactory explanation from Sotomayor regarding her opinion that “…a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” Now that's serious and it is a problem.
I remember being told that Hispanic was a code word for peninsulare. As opposed to Creole or mestizo.
Except she followed up the comment with this:
No one person, judge or nominee will speak in a female or people of color voice.
Unless something else is uncovered, she will be confirmed and repubs can kiss off the hispanic (or latino or whatever you prefer) vote for awhile. With guys like El Rushbo and Newt calling her a racist, and Jim Sessions (with a few racist comments himself) calling for an activist Supreme Court, repubs are sinking to a new level of incompetence. And you can't even blame this on Bush or Steele.
How troubling it is that we have a president who openly states that he wants a judge who will set aside the constitution in 5% of the cases. And how further troubling it is that we have a nominee who openly embraces the idea that her gender and race bestow superior moral wisdom. This is arrogance squared, and also racist.
As Thomas Sowell says of the latter: Racism has a terrible track record, and isn't it time we do away with it rather than continuing it under new management?
Sessions said that SCOTUS set law not enact it. Big difference. I may set the thermostat but that doesn't mean I built it.
mark,
And what does that mean, exactly?
I don't see where it refutes her belief in racial superiority.
One other thing - why are you so obsessed with Limbaugh?
Good try, Pat. So laws, like thermostats, can be set at varying degrees, depending on you comfort? You sound like a judicial activist.
mark-Complain to Linda Greenhouse or any of the law reviews when the examine a law "set" aside by SCOTUS.
"set" vs. "made"
These are two very fundamental words in language, with deep but separate roots. They clearly do NOT connote the same idea.
I realize that post-modernists like today's Dems have a very weak handle on vocabulary. They will unthinkingly redefine any term to serve their partisan political ends. "Torture", "terrorist", "investment", "profit", "choice", "fascist", even "is" - the list goes on and on.
This is one of the things that makes reasonable debate with them impossible. Sad. But I believe that's how they prefer it. In a reasonable debate, they don't have much to stand on.
tfhr,
As I said, it was a poor choice of words. But I don't believe (and I don't think many people do) that she actually meant to say that Latinas are superior. But at this point, that seems the only thing conservatives have.
As for Rush, he's just an interesting freak show, kinda like Al Sharpton or Blogo. I'm far more intrigued that millions can rally behind such a weak man - even bragging about being dittoheads/lemmings. That you and millions can side with chickenhawk cowards like he and Cheney on Gitmo and torture over military heroes like Powell and Petreaus is truly baffling. But it certainly explains why the repup party is crumbling.
mark,
You said:
"poor choice of words"
What a lame excuse when neither you nor I know what she really believes until she explains herself. Until then the statement is out there waiting for her to take responsibility for it.
As for your tedious chicken-hawk smear, why do you resort to such futile tactics? By your standard nobody can offer an opinion unless they have endured the ultimate outcome of that opinion. Do you support abortion? How can you if you've never had one?
Well?
Further, if service on the battlefield is a requirement for VPs then you need to demand that Joe Biden resign today. Actually, I'd prefer that you start your recall campaign until after the nomination hearings for Sotomayor are complete because I would not want to endure Biden's gaffe plagued filibuster-like questions as he preens and poses for the cameras.
Finally, set yourself free and give this allegiance to "the party" a rest. Try being an American first instead of the incessant Democrat party this and Republican party that. Think for yourself to think of your country first!
Just imagine the same speech in front of say the Federalist Society and then substitute white or European for every Latino, Latina or person of color and imagine the response among the Left. However one thing is that most of the audience at a Federalist Society meeting would have either walked out of such a racist address or stayed to skewer the speaker in the question period rather than the fawning Judge Sotomayer received in Berkeley.
equitus - Your last comment hits the nail squarely on the head. Your average Lefty can't argue or persuade using facts and logic because their core beliefs are premised upon fantasy and emotion. That's why they're masters at: (A) deflecting arguments to side issues or non-issues; (B) avoiding addressing the real questions posed to them at all costs; (C) impugning the character of their philosophical opponents; and (D) outright lying whenever convenient. Take this thread as an example. The topic is the inevitable quagmire that Leftist racial identity politics creates. For instance, we're forced by politically correctness & multiculturalism to consider how much of what kind of blood makes someone Hispanic. Of course, this question is forced on us by the same people who justifiably sneer at the old Southern laws that defined a person as "Negro" if they were 1/64th part black. If asked why it was wrong to define a "Negro" as someone who is 1/64th or more black but it's right and proper to define some other person as legitimately "Hispanic" or "Latino/Latina" or what-have-you because they have some approved percentage of the right kind of ancestry, a typical Lefty will avoid answering the question by deflecting to some other topic, call you a racist for even asking the question, and then lie to you by saying Hispanics can't succeed in America without a boost by the government......And then the Lefty will call Rush Limbaugh a bad name.
tfhr,
As far as explaining her statement, I agree with you. I have said that she needs to explain her comments(and given the opportunity to do so), but that it was absurd and politically asinine for Rush and Newt to be call her a racist and the latter to say she should withdraw.
The rest of your post is blather. It's not whether or not a vp has served, it's who has more gravitas on the issue. You've chosen the side of clowns like Rush, Cheney, Hannity and Kristol, who talk tough but chose not to serve, over men who have served our country (hence don't need the tough talk) such as Powell, Petreaus, Mullen and McCain, and remain dedicated to serving our country, not their own self-interests.
"Petreaus"? I thought the left called him "Betrayus". Oh that's right--that was when Bush was President.
"court of appeals is where policy is made."
Another interesting remark by Sotomayor. No wonder Obama appointed her.
mark,
Your complaint that those that didn't serve cannot advocate for using military force undercuts the currently serving President and Vice-President. You need to think these things through when your favored party is on the outside looking in - before you spout off.
Again: Try being an American first instead of the incessant Democrat party this and Republican party that. Think for yourself to think of your country first!
