Closing Gitmo

The Obama team is saying that he will close Guantanamo prison camp in an executive order as soon as he takes office.
Advisers to President-elect Barack Obama say one of his first duties in office will be to order the closing of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.

That executive order is expected during Obama's first week on the job — and possibly on his first day, according to two transition team advisers. Both spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Obama's order will direct his administration to figure out what to do with the estimated 250 al-Qaida and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses who are being held at Guantanamo.
Of course, saying that they're going to close it is a different job from finding places to put those prisoners. Tom Maguire sums up the job that Hillary Clinton is going to have in persuading other countries to take these prisoners that the Bush administration hasn't been able to offload on them.
What a great opportunity for Hillary to display her diplomatic skills. Her basic message to our allies would be this - we are holding a bunch of dangerous men but the evidence against them does not meet contemporary standards of Western jurisprudence. We can't in good conscience send them back to their home countries, we can't try them, we are embarrassed to be holding them without trial, and not even Mike Dukakis would cut these global Willie Hortons loose, so could you take them from us and figure this out?

Should be an easy sell. One wonders what is taking so long.
Interesting to see how the Obama crowd squares that circle.

Well I wonder what happens if there is a major jhadi attack after Obama closes Gitmo?

Remand them to the custody of those crying most loudly for their release?

I propose a swap: Send the Gitmo campers to Illinois in exchange for Blagojevich. The Illinois government cannot seem to figure out how to handle Blago and the new Federal government cannot seem to figure out what to do about terrorist detainees held safely at Guantanamo, so let them swap. I'll even throw in 61 former detainees (see link) that seem to have been serving as ambassadors of jihadi good-will since their release.

http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE50C5JX20090113?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&rpc=22&sp=true

Maybe the good people of Illinois can send one to Washington to be their next elected senator!

Turn them all over to the good citizens of Mumbai, India. Let them decide the fate of these jihads!

According to ABC News' release of information from a once SECRET document, there are four U.S. military installations under consideration as replacement locations for the GITMO campers. [http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=6664947&page=1] (Thanks ABC for respecting the need to conduct this matter with some semblance of security!)

If California does get the nod as the Guantanamo replacement, I wonder if the detainees will get conjugal visits from all their Hollywood well-wishers? Or if the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit will dominate the dance cards of the wonderful and talented, yet misunderstood, GITMO victims.

According to the ABC article and much of what others report, it is Obama's intent to sign off on the order to close the detention facility at Guantanamo on the day he is inaugurated. Quite a contrast with the people that were freed from detention on Reagan's first day in office. Still, I doubt that many will leave Guantanamo any time soon as the campaign bait for fools will give way to the difficult reality of what to do with them.

Drop them off on Hollywood Blvd or Castro St, and watch their heads explode.
