The Guardian is reporting that he has offered her the job and she is going to accept it. I'm not sure why the Guardian would be the beneficiary of such a leak? Can't they leak to an American newspaper? Though Ben Smith is now reporting that he did indeed make the offer to her and the only holdup is working out Bill Clinton's role at his foundation.
I'd been thinking that, no matter what your opinion is of Barack Obama, at least he had helped clear out the Clintons from controlling politics for another four years. If this story is true, I guess we'll still have them around. Sigh.
It would be a very odd set up to have the Secretary of State's husband in control of a foundation that specializes in giving our foreign aid and who likes to go around talking about foreign policy. And I find it hard to believe that the Obama team has already gotten all the information from the Clintons on donations to his library and foundation. After all, we do know that he's received donations from the Saudi royal family, the King of Morocco, and other government officials in Middle East countries. Is that information now going to be public? Shouldn't we know which foreign donors have given money to the spouse of the Secretary of State? Can you imagine if any other candidate for Secretary of State had received money from foreign nations? It's just unimaginable.
It demonstrates that the Obama team doesn't really care about that long questionnaire. Maybe it's good for those lesser known appointments to be Deputy Assistant Secretary of Something or Other, but it's difficult to believe that Hillary filled out that long form or, if she did so, she did it with anything like the completeness demanded.
The media will lap up this story. They'll dissect every gesture, phrase, or facial expression to indicate that there are tensions between the White House and the State Department. And the State Department is full of people who like to leak.
Already we're hearing stories of how there are those in Obamaworld who are upset that , having defeated her and put to rest the idea that the Clinton presidency should still guide the Democratic Party, he's going to bring them back into the public light.
This would create an opening in 2010 in the New York Senate. Rudy Giuliani may get the opportunity to run for that seat another time. Or he could run for governor. I'd recommend running for governor - a much more important job than being one of a hundred senators and in the minority.
Can't you just picture the discussions between Obama and Clinton when she tries to demonstrate that she is the knowledgeable one and he's being naive. Or when she recommends going back to the policies of her husband.
With all this publicity, if he hasn't offered her the job, he may well be pushed into doing so. Can he really afford to publicly pass her over one more time?

Let's assume Hillary still wants to be President. Why would she give up her secure Senate seat and bully pulpit to put herself on Obama's team and under his direction? Secretary of State is a horrible launch pad for a Presidential run.
