Now that the Palin family has announced that their 17-year old daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and plans to marry the father of her baby, I'm sure that the same lefties who were gleefully painting her as the real mother of baby Trig will be claiming that their slimy rumor-mongering was "fake but accurate." Of course, there is a real difference between the fake story and the real story.
It is certainly painful for the daughter to have her private business broadcast around the world, but presumably she was on board with this when her mother accepted McCain's offer. This is a choice that the family made and we shouldn't judge it any more than people could judge John and Elizabeth Edwards' decision to continue his presidential campaign knowing about the return of her cancer (and about his philandering, but that's another story.)
I suspect that this won't hurt Sarah Palin at all among the conservative base. I'm not a conservative Christian, but I believe that they will be happy to see the parents' loving response.
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that, as parents, we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."
The issue is not whether a daughter has premarital sex, but how the family responds when they find out. And their response of love and support is all that anyone, no matter how culturally conservative, would ask.
It is certainly more appealing to those cultural conservatives than Obama's remark concerning the possibility that one of his daughters would get pregnant while a teenager.
"I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."
Lovingly welcoming a prospective grandchild is quite a bit different from regarding the daughter as being punished with a baby.
In their response, the Palins have shown their character. Let us now draw the curtain on all the speculation about the Palin pregnancies and children. It's been an ugly episode, but all the rabid rumormongering accomplished was to give the McCain campaign a perfect opening to release the news of Bristol's pregnancy as a response to that ugliness. And since the true story is of such a different caliber from the fevered rumors, people will care even less about their private business.
UPDATE: Ed Morrissey has a thoughtful and moving post up about this situation having gone through it with his son and daughter-in-law. And be sure to read the posts he links to about their graduations. If you're at all sentimental, be sure to have Kleenex nearby.
He has just the right touch when he quotes from the movie Knocked Up that this isn't a catastrophe; a hurricane is a catastrophe. Now that is the correct perspective.
