Why not vet Hillary?

Now that Politico has reported and Drudge has trumpeted that the Obama campaign never even vetted Hillary Clinton as a possible vice-presidential candidate, I wonder why he didn't vet her even if he never planned to pick her.

Angry Hillary supporters are not going to be mollified to learn that he didn't even consider her at all despite his statement that she would be on anybody's short list. Just when he's trying to mend fences, these supporters have an additional reason to take umbrage at how she's been treated.

And from a totally cynical perspective, wouldn't he like to have that report on as many of the Clinton secrets he could get them to divulge? He could have demanded the financial reports from the Clinton Library and all the information on Bill's finances since leaving office. And, even if he never really meant to consider her, he'd have a lovely stockpile of information that could be used if he ever had future problems with the Clinton team. If Obama is elected and there start to be murmurings about Clinton challenging him in 2012 or not supporting him on some major Obama initiative, all he'd have to do is arrange for some leak to the media about some of that interesting information. Instead, he's managed to find another way to aggravate the tensions with Hillary's supporters and added another element of Clinton drama to all the conversation that the pundits will be having during the convention next week.
