Calling the vote in New Hampshire

Fox calls the primary for John McCain. There had been all this talk of Romney having made a comeback in the past couple of days, but it wasn't enough. Call McCain the Comeback Geezer. You've got to give the guy credit. People were all predicting he'd have to drop out this summer, but he kept in. He still has a tough row to hoe since supposedly he doesn't have that much money and on the ground organizations in many of the other states. Is he going to be able to put it together this quickly for the February 5 states?

It's still too close to call for the Democrats. With 12% reporting, Hillary is ahead by two points. The Fox exit polls showed Obama up by 5%, but Michael Barone warned that they are still getting exit poll results and that New Hampshire exit polls don't have a great track record.

You know if Obama has a single digit win, after all this hoopla and hagiographic press we've seen since Thursday, Hillary might still have a chance. Remember that New Hampshire has an open primary with heavy independents turning out, purportedly for Obama. That would mean that Hillary was doing well among just the Democratic voters and might be able to duplicate that in the states with closed primaries.

If, and at this point it's still a big if, Hillary has tightened the gap with Obama that everyone thought had opened up since Iowa, will people start saying that it was the crying that helped her? Lord help us!
