A hate crime in Baltimore?

Hmmm A Molotov cocktail gets thrown at the Hebrew University in Baltimore and the police don't see any reason to call it a hate crime.
Moses said detectives determined the fire was started by an incendiary device, such as a Molotov cocktail, thrown at a steel door, causing no damage. It is being investigated by the department's arson unit, but has not yet been classified as a hate crime.

"At this point, there's nothing that would indicate that this is a hate crime," Moses said. "They have problems with juveniles in that area."
This is why it is so stupid to have a special classification for "hate crimes." How are they going to separate what is a hate crime and what isn't unless they arrest someone and the person is stupid enough to start spouting off anti-Semitic rants. Let's just count all of these crimes as what they are - attempted arson or murder, as in the case of the Seattle Jewish Center murder - and leave it at that. I never understood why murder was worse if the person did it because he hates Jews or blacks or because he just hates the person he shot or if he just wanted money. The victim is still dead. Why should motive (apart from self-defense) make a murder more or less heinous? I objected to all this talk about hate crime when the subject was James Byrd in Texas before the 2000 election and I object to it now when it involves crimes against Jews. Prosecute people for what they do, not for what they think.
