So, Drudge has up the correction that the Associated Press has issued Friday night clarifying that the Katrina video showed Bush being warned about the levees being overtopped but not being breached.
Clarification: Katrina-Video story ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) _ In a March 1 story, The Associated Press reported that federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees in New Orleans, citing confidential video footage of an Aug. 28 briefing among U.S. officials.
The Army Corps of Engineers considers a breach a hole developing in a levee rather than an overrun. The story should have made clear that Bush was warned about floodwaters overrunning the levees, rather than the levees breaking.
The day before the storm hit, Bush was told there were grave concerns that the levees could be overrun. It wasn't until the next morning, as the storm was hitting, that Michael Brown, then head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Bush had inquired about reports of breaches. Bush did not participate in that briefing.
That was something that Powerline had reported on two days before the AP figured it out. The blogosphere had figured this one out way before AP realized that they had created a media storm with their faulty reporting. Once, you get away from the story that Bush lied about being warned about the levees would break, all you have is a video that shows that Bush was warned that this would be an enormous storm. Duh. We all knew that must have happened even before the storm hit. After all, he declared the region a disaster area before the storm even hit. The only reason why the AP story was a story was to showcase the storyline that Bush had lied. But he didn't, however the clarification will be a spit in the wind of the brouhaha. Cable news talked about this for three days and the newspapers around the country carried the faulty story. Will they issue big front page headlines saying "Never mind"? You know the answer to that one.
And, indeed, Powerline is once more on the case to look out on the MSM and not find (surprise, surprise) any clarification anywhere of the mistake that AP made in their original reporting. posted by Betsy Newmark permalink 8:37 AM
