Iran's top negotiator about their nuclear program has spilled the yellowcake about how they deliberately strung along the Europeans in negotiations all the while expanding their development of their nuclear program.
In a speech to a closed meeting of leading Islamic clerics and academics, Hassan Rowhani, who headed talks with the so-called EU3 until last year, revealed how Teheran played for time and tried to dupe the West after its secret nuclear programme was uncovered by the Iranian opposition in 2002.
Iran has completed uranium enrichment equipment at Isfahan He boasted that while talks were taking place in Teheran, Iran was able to complete the installation of equipment for conversion of yellowcake - a key stage in the nuclear fuel process - at its Isfahan plant but at the same time convince European diplomats that nothing was afoot.
"From the outset, the Americans kept telling the Europeans, 'The Iranians are lying and deceiving you and they have not told you everything.' The Europeans used to respond, 'We trust them'," he said.
Gee, and this surprises anyone? WE all knew that this is what was going on. But, Rowhani has committed the faux pas of removing the fig leaf that Europe used to protect their illusions that they were accomplishing something with all their negotiations with Iran. I would say that they won't be able to fool themselves any more, but I don't want to underestimate their capability of self-delusion if it would prevent them from actually having to make some tough decisions about what to do about Iran. posted by Betsy Newmark permalink 9:25 AM
