Random Jottings has a detailed answer to John Hawkins' complaint that Bush has left conservatives behind and that they should no longer trust him. To tell the truth, they're both right. Bush has been reliably conservative on some issues and unreliable on other issues. It is as I tell my students when they have to answer an Advanced Placement essay prompt: few things in history are all one way or another. The truth usually lies somewhere in the middle. It is a messy truth and applies to the question of how conservative Bush has or hasn't been.
