The Chicago Tribune reports that the new nomination could come as early as today. Apparently, Owen, Luttig, Alito, and Williams are the group being considered with Luttig and Alito in the lead.
That puts the spotlight on Alito, whose philosophy, intellect and Italian heritage have drawn so many comparisons to Justice Antonin Scalia that he is sometimes called "Scalito," and Luttig, a favorite of many legal conservatives and Republican senators.
If he picks either Luttig or Alito, the Democrats will really wish that they had Harriet Miers back again.

The American Spectator Blog has also picked up scuttlebutt that Alito is in the lead with Luttig also in the mix. Although, they could all be talking to the same low-level staffer who has no real idea what is going on. But, at this point, the rumors are fun to ponder.... Much more fun than the indictment rumors.

Erick at Red State has heard the same rumors. Word is that the White House is looking for someone already on the federal bench. No more outsiders with "different" backgrounds and experiences. Alito and Luttig are the two names being thrown around.
