Fox News is reporting that William Rehnquist has said that he is not retiring. I'm so glad that he came out with a clear statement. Why couldn't he have done that weeks ago? He couldn't have been enjoying the speculation, could he? It was so ghoulish, like heirs divvying up the inheritance while the elderly uncle is alive in his bed.

I was ready to admit I was wrong, but now it seems I may have been right when I made this prediction about a month ago.

UPDATE: Here is the statement he put out.
"I want to put to rest the speculation and unfounded rumors of my imminent retirement," Rehnquist, 80, said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press. "I am not about to announce my retirement. I will continue to perform my duties as chief justice as long as my health permits."
