Tomorrow's news today.

Yesterday I blogged about an e-mail that was being sent around to college students scaring them with lies that Bush was going to reinstitute the draft. I speculated that either the Democrats or anti-Bush people were behind this and linked to information to show that the only ones pushing for a draft are Democrats.

Now, it seems that this is an orchestrated attack strategy by the Democrats. Kerry today said that Bush probably would have to reinstitute the draft if reelected.
Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, citing the war in Iraq and other trouble spots in the world, raised the possibility Wednesday that a military draft could be reinstated if voters re-elect President Bush.
Kerry said he would not bring back the draft and questioned how fairly it was administered in the past.

Answering a question about the draft that had been posed at a forum with voters, Kerry said: "If George Bush were to be re-elected, given the way he has gone about this war and given his avoidance of responsibility in North Korea and Iran and other places, is it possible? I can't tell you."

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other Pentagon officials have been asked numerous times whether they thought a draft would be necessary to maintain force levels in Iraq. They have said consistently that they think it is neither necessary nor desirable, since today's military is built on volunteer service and professionalism.

That is how insidious this tactic is. If the administration denies it, the Dems can say that of course the Bush people are denying it...now. But just wait until after the election; that's when those wascally Republicans will start drafting kids.

Snopes even has an entry debunking this e-mail.

I wish kids (and Democrats) understood more about how our political system works. Any such draft would require the bill to be passed through Congress. Do they really think that a majority of both houses would support such a bill? Even if the Republicans pushed such a bill - do you really think that the Democrats wouldn't filibuster it? There is no way that such a bill could get through Congress even if Iraq turned much worse.
