One of the criticisms leveled at the President is that he sought guard service to keep him from serving in Vietnam. The Bush campaign should be doing better by getting that part of his record out there.
Morrisey says, "not so."
"The Air Force, in their ultimate wisdom, assembled a group of 102's and took them to Southeast Asia. Bush volunteered to go. But he needed to have 500 [flight] hours, but he only had just over 300 hours so he wasn't eligible to go,” Morrisey recalls.
Despite that, Lieutenant Bush stayed busy.
"He flew in active air defense missions, training missions. Day, night, regardless of inclement weather," Morrisey says.
Colonel Morrisey assured us that to the best of his knowledge Lieutenant Bush was treated like any other officer in the Texas Air National Guard.

Here is part of the story of Bush's National Guard service that never gets mentioned in the MSM. Bush actually volunteered to go to Vietnam but was turned down. Here is a story from WVLT-TV CBS/8 (copyrighted) interviewing Colonel Morrissey of the Air National Guard who swore Bush in to the Texas Air National Guard.

Thanks for publicizing this. I honestly don't think what happened all those years ago is that important, but I do think facts are important.
Your posts all seem well-researched and informative. It is appreciated.
Betsy, I can think of two reasons why Bush is not stressing his National Guard record.
He is playing rope-a-dope while the left says more and more outrageous things. Then in the middle of October, he will run commercials detailing his commendable military career.
Or
He realizes that most people don’t care what he did 35 years ago and that he doesn’t want to get off message.
I'm not sure Bush needs to be running after his credability in the National Guard right now. That is the issue Kerry is running on lol. Which we have seen how well Kerry's service has really helped his cause. Besides its simple if you dont show up, you dont get paid, and you surely dont get an honorable discharge.
It frustrates me that the White House keeps repeating the same basic message - that the President fulfilled hsi commitment and was honorably discharged. I'm not sure why they don't highlight the statements that have been made by men who actually served with him. The MSM sure seems to be ignoring them.

I'm still wondering where Michael Dukaukis is? He wasnt at the DNC! No one has seen him. Have the Dems got him tied up and held hostage till after the election? What is he hiding about Kerry's stint as his Lt. Governor?
I'm comfortable with how the Bush campaign is addressing his service. I think he probably did get a little loose near the end, which was par for the course when the war was winding down. And that in no way substantiates some of the negative claims from the left.
What really bothers me is how the MSM continues to prop up false accusations against Bush in this regard, while simply dismissing genuine issues in and around "Cut and Run" Kerry's service record. There's a another interesting piece on this issue posted today on Beldar's Blog, if anyone is interested. http://beldar.blogs.com/beldarblog/2004/09/a_challenge_to_.html

Betsy,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've done quite a bit of research on this and found some more information. It's at my blog:
