Stan Brown, a reader whose comments really rate his own blog, has a historical analogy about how the media defends Democrats. The media is the Maginot Line for Kerry. And it is proving just as ill-suited to do its job as the original did in protecting the French from a mobile, fast-moving German army.
John Kerry must be feeling very French right now. It's 1940 and his massive defense structure is utterly incapable of stopping or even slowing the mobile forces attacking him.

The obvious media bias that we are witnessing in the coverage of the Swiftvets vs. Kerry is something that everyone is pointing out. And each mainstream media effort to shoot at the Swiftvets gets fisked somewhere in the blogosphere. But I haven't seen anyone discuss how thoroughly incompetent the entire media effort has been. They really are the gang that can't shoot straight.

At first, I was tempted to say that their bias has made them stupid. More and more, however, I am beginning to think that they just lack the tools of reason and logic. In the daily fumbling of facts and logic by Kerry's dedicated defenders, we are witnessing a display of massive incompetence.

It has been noted that a lot of the bloggers on the front lines of this story are lawyers (Glenn, Power Line, Hugh, et al). They have been running rings around the media fortress when it comes to marshalling evidence and constructing logical arguments. In marked contrast, the media keeps giving us stories which make it obvious that they haven't read the books, they don't know the issues, they haven't familiarized themselves with the witnesses and they don't even know how to find the library (much less do any research).

While Kerry has certainly been inept, his media defenders have been abominable.

To adapt a line from Animal House, "Slow, biased, and stupid is no way to go through life."

I find it shameful that the Far Right has taken its fascism to a new level and subverted our democratic process. When Kerry wins, I expect him to do the right ting and regulate blogs, talk radio and Fox News to halt this disturbing trend of "digital brownshirts."

Alas, you make the mistake of the naive. You assume that the media was at least once upon a time, objective. They have always been power whores. Power is what they crave, and they will commit any obscenity, witness Bill Clinton, to cozy up to those who will tody to them.
