E. J. Dionne notes that Republicans should stop whining about Democrats who make fun of or hate Bush since they did it all first with Clinton. I think the point Dionne is missing is that the Republicans were unable to unseat Clinton no matter how much they despised him. It didn't work with Nixon in 1972 either. The great majority of the American people don't want to hate their president. Hatred is not a sufficient reason to run against a president. The Democrats will have to do more than despise Bush. They'll have to offer reasonable alternatives that they will keep the US safe in this time of security concerns.
