The House has passed their version of the Special Education bill. I like the reforms to stop labeling kids with behavioral and reading problems as disabled. I also like the effor to reduce paperwork by having renewals of IEP's done every three years instead of every year. Those involve considerable time in meetings every year for us basically to pass what was written the previous year. My special pet peeve is the regulation limiting the number of days a special ed student can be suspended. So, often if a special ed student and a regular student get into a fight, they can get different punishments because the administrator doesn't want to top out on the limitation of suspension days allowed for a special ed student. And remember, that the designation, special ed, includes students who have a reading disability which should be totally unrelated to their behavior.
